UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) is a South African government benefit that provides short-term financial relief to workers who lose their jobs, go on maternity leave, or cannot work due to illness.

Employees who contributed to UIF (1% of salary deducted monthly). Workers who were employed for more than 24 hours per month. Those who lost their job, are on maternity leave, or unable to work due to illness.

Our calculator uses the official UIF formulas from the Department of Labour, so estimates are very close to what you’d receive. However, final amounts depend on UIF approval.

UIF benefits are calculated on a maximum salary of R17,712 per month, even if you earn more. This is a government rule.
